The Economics Of Love

Tim* and I met at an economics class in university. Though we didn’t know it at the time, two things would bring us together by the end of the semester – our near-identical timetables and a mutual fascination with Adam Smith. For him, it was Smith the economist – author of Wealth of Nations and the father of modern economics. For me, it was the newspaper astrologist – author of the lesser known (but no less powerfully titled)Saturn, Fatal Attraction
CAPTION
Smith, the astrologer                                                   Smith, the economist

Growing up, I looked forward to reading my weekly horoscopes the way old people would lust after their new TV guides. At the back of every Sunday paper was a colourful preview of my seven-day forecast. It always sounded so busy and hopeful (“Friends and family will need your counsel.” “Bold Mars clash with flirtatious Venus!”), making the comparative tedium of my actual week somehow more bearable.
But on the Sunday before my first week of uni, Smith offered no hint that I was about to get into my first real relationship. Nor did he foreshadow that because of a new crush, I was going to – despite my morbid fear of numbers – start looking forward to the economics lectures.

Eventually, I realised that the otherAdam actually had much better advice when it comes to navigating the nuances of love. Here is what some of the most common relationship dilemmas might look like through the eyes of an economist:

ON BEING SINGLE

Scarcity:
Also known as the “basic economic problem”, economists are forever trying to allocate limited resources to satisfy infinite wants and desires. But the same conundrum also extends to the dating economy. One economist thinks the odds of finding real love is no more than 1 in 280,000 in London (for himself, at least), while another thinks it’s about as likely as being kicked in the head by a horse. This could account for the booming market ofliterature advising bitches ladies to settle for Mr Good Enough – but does it mean you should you ‘settle’ for less?
Not according to Smith. In fact, by pursuing our self-interest/ Ryan Gosling (as opposed to settling for a ‘bad equilibrium’), Smith argues that we will be “indirectly promoting" the greater good. Bottom line? Let the market’s ‘invisible hand’ guide you.

OPEN (CASKET) RELATIONSHIPS

Bad equilibrium:
Presumably the cause of “open casket” romances– which is to say, relationships that are healthy-looking apart from their being dead. A bad equilibrium is defined as “a strategy that all the players in the game can adopt and converge on, but it won't produce a desirable outcome for anyone.” According to Dan Ariely, author ofPredictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions, this can also apply to first dates where we automatically default to making boring small talks in order not to appear too eager or intrusive.

“It's easy to talk about our views on the weather or food,” writes Ariely, “But while that may guarantee that we don't fail on this date, it does nothing to get us closer to success, as it provides us little useful information on whether we are a long-term romantic match.”

JERK ADDICTION

Cognitive dissonance:
Ever wondered why some (usually intelligent) people stay with men/ women who treat them like rubbish? Apparently, this may have something to do with cognitive dissonance – a psychological phenomenon that describes consumers who are keen to feel good about past decisions – even if it’s a likely mistake.
“There is considerable evidence in psychology that people like to view themselves as being smart, and in particular, as having made correct decisions in the past,” writes economists Larry Epstein and Igor Kopylov, “Thus they may change beliefs after taking an action and become more optimistic about its possible consequences, in order to feel better about having chosen it.”

It also goes some way to explain why ‘playing hard to get’ works on some people: to justify all the effort, they will rationalise it by deciding it’s because “they really like you”.

WHY NO ONE WANTS TO SAY 'I LOVE YOU' FIRST

Game theory
: Thanks to Russel Crowe, most of us are now well-versed in how game theory works, if only in a pick-up situation.  At its simplest form (i.e. Prisoner’s Dilemma), the theory helps you decide on the “best course of action following your opponent’s choice” – with one important caveat: it doesn’t necessarily yield the ‘best’ possible outcome, just the most logical. (Say, what now?)
CAPTION
So for example, in the case of whether or not to say ‘I love you’ in a new relationship, according to Nobel-prize winning economist John Nash, the dominant strategy (ie. one that leads to minimal loss no matter what the other person does) is to stay silent (lest one person confesses their love and gets rejected). Even though the “best possible outcome” is actually for both parties to take the plunge and say how they feel.

HANGING OUT

The law of diminishing returns
: As Alain de Botton explains in Essays in Love, "Happiness with other people seems bounded by two kinds of excesses: suffocation and loneliness.” The law of diminishing returns states that the more you consume of a good, the less satisfaction you’ll derive from the next unit of consumption.  (Eg. the first slice of pizza will always taste better than the second, and so on. Even if you weren’t drunk) This can also apply to dud dates, or the amount of ‘couch time’ with your partner each week.
CAPTION
LETTING GO

Sunk cost vs opportunity cost:
When it comes to deciding whether to stay or go, economists say we shouldn’t be held back by ‘sunk costs’ – in other words, losses that have “already been incurred and cannot be recovered”.  One of the most common reasons for staying in a dysfunctional relationship is the fear of “losing everything you’ve invested” in it. But in doing that, argues Smith, we are missing out on the future opportunity of happiness.
After the first semester, Tim and I went on to share many more economics classes. By the end of uni, we’d been together for two and a half years which, up until that point, had been 83 per cent of my adult life. And because we socialised together, at least 90 per cent of our friends were mutual.  In other words, the ‘sunk costs’ were relatively substantial.
But at 21 and not having really dated anyone else, were we really ready to settle down? Our economics forefathers taught us no. So after some tearful discussions, we decided it was time to let each other go. It wasn’t easy to say goodbye – but Adam would’ve been proud.

How To Ask A Girl Out

Stop Hanging Out With Women and Start Dating Them

by BRETT AND KATE MCKAY on JANUARY 16, 2008 ·
startdating.png
Over the past few years, many social observers have noted that young adults are dating less. Instead, dating is being replaced by “hanging out” with members of the opposite sex. Dating and hanging out are two completely different things.
Hanging out consists of people getting together in groups and doing stuff together. It could be going to a club, a restaurant, or just staying home and playing Wii. The atmosphere is relaxed and relations among opposite sexes never rises above the level of friendship (or friendship with benefits). There is nothing wrong with hanging out, but it is not a replacement for dating.
Dating consists of pairing off with someone in a temporary commitment so you can get to know the person better and perhaps start a long term relationship with them.

Why the decline in dating?

There are probably lots of factors that have contributed to the decline of dating amongst young adults. Here are few possible ones:
1. Young adults don’t like to commit. It seems like people in my generation aren’t big on making commitments to people or to organizations. Generation Y is too busy trying to “find themselves” in order to commit to anybody or anything. Companies have complained about the turn over rate of Generation Y. Companies invest lots of money training new employees only to have them leave after two years so they can find a new job. This reluctance to commit has carried over to the interaction between the sexes. Young adults don’t want to be tied down to someone just in case they get an itch to go on a backpacking trip to Europe.
2. The internet has retarded Generation Y’s social skills. Instead of telling a person directly that they’re interested in them by asking them on a date, Generation Y sends Crush alerts on Facebook. While the internet has made connecting with people easier, it has also made us lazier at establishing meaningful relationships. If you’re over 18 and you’re still using Facebook applications to let someone know you’re interested in them, you need to be punched in the face.
3. Feminism. Before I receive the wrath of all the feminists telling me it’s a typical man thing to blame women for the decline in dating, I ask that you hear me out. I think feminism is great. It’s great that women can choose to have a career, be a stay-at-home mom, or do both.
But it does make things confusing for men. Navigating relations among the sexes is a bit more tricky today. Men have all these questions go through their head: Who asks? If I ask, will she think I’m too forward? Who pays for the date? Do we split the bill? All these uncertainties cause men to avoid dating altogether and opt for hanging out with women instead.
4. Men today are wussies. Men today aren’t very resilient. They don’t know how to handle rejection or failure, so they avoid rejection or failure by not asking women out on dates.

Why date?

A lot of men today don’t seem to believe it, but getting hitched to the right woman is a very desirable thing.
So while there is nothing wrong with hanging out, it’s not a replacement for dating. Dating is the pathway to finding your true love and eventually settling down and getting married. Marriage is a one on one relationship, so you need to start getting to know women on a one on one basis. You might be hanging out with her and your friends right now, but if you don’t take her on date, she’ll forever be just your friend. So, start dating and stop hanging out. It really is not that hard to get a date with a woman. Here are some guidelines to remember as you take hanging out up a level to dating.

Resurrect Dating

So, you’re ready to start dating and stop hanging out. It really is not that hard to get a date with a woman. Here are some guidelines to remember as you take hanging out up a level to dating.
1. She wants you to ask. Despite the rhetoric you hear about the liberated woman, women still appreciate it when a guy asks her out on a date. They like when men take the initiative. I’ve heard lots of successful young professional women lament the fact that men don’t ask them out. They’re beautiful, smart, and charming, but don’t have a man. Be a man and ask these women out.
2. Asking is easy. Asking a woman out on a date isn’t rocket science. When you ask, though, do it in person or over the phone. If you’re poking a woman you’re interested in on Facebook, you lose any credibility as a man.
3. Keep dates simple. Dates don’t have to be huge, expensive affairs. Keep it simple. If you want to keep things informal, ask her out for lunch or coffee. If you want a more romantic date, invite her over to your place and make dinner for her. She’ll be impressed that you know how to cook. The whole point of dating is to get some one on one interaction with a person to find out if she is someone you’d like to start a long term relationship with. Simple and frequent dates will assist you in this.
4. Prepare for rejection. Face it. Not every woman you ask out is going to say yes. Prepare for that. It’s no big deal if she says no. Think about it. You’re no worse off getting rejected than you were before you asked. You didn’t have a date with her before, you don’t have a date with her now. Your situation has not changed.
5. Just do it, damn it. So what are you waiting for? Quit reading this post right now and pick up your cell phone. Call a woman and ask her on a date. Stop hanging out and start dating. Stop being scared of commitment. Commitment is liberating, not confining.

Installing Love

Installing Love

Tech Support:   Yes, how can I help you?

Customer:         Well, after much consideration, I've decided to install Love. Can you guide me through the process?

Tech Support:   Yes. I can help you. Are you ready to proceed?

Customer:          Well, I'm not very technical, but I think I'm ready- What do I do first?
Tech Support:   The first step is to open y our Heart.   Have you located   your Heart?

Customer:          Yes, but there are several other programs running now.
Is it okay to install Love while they are running?

Tech Support:   What programs are running ?

Customer:          Let's see, I have Past Hurt, Low Self-Esteem, Grudge and Resentment running right now.

Tech Support:  No problem. Love will gradually erase Past Hurt from your current operating system.   It may remain in your permanent memory but it will no longer  disrupt other programs.    Love will eventually override Low Self-Esteem with a module of its own called High Self-Esteem. However, you have to completely turn off Grudge and Resentment.   Those programs prevent Love from being properly installed.   Can you turn those off?

Customer:         I don't know how to turn them off.   Can you tell me how?

Tech Support:
With pleasure.  Go to your start menu and invoke Forgiveness.  Do this as many times as necessary until Grudge and Resentment have been completely erased.

Customer:       Okay, done!  Love has started installing itself.   Is that normal?

Tech Support: Yes, but remember that you have only the base program.    You need to begin connecting to other Hearts in order to get the upgrades.
Customer:       Oops! I have an error message already.   It says, ' Error -  Program not run on external components' What should I do?

Tech Support:
Don't worry.   It means that the Love program is set up to run on Internal Hearts, but has not yet been run on your Heart.
In non-technical terms, it simply means you have to Love yourself before you can Love others.

Customer:          So, what should I do?

Tech Support:   Pull down Self-Acceptance; then click on the following files:  Forgive-Self; Realize your Worth; and Acknowledge your Limitations.

Customer:         Okay, done.

Tech Support:   Now, copy them to the 'My Heart' directory.  The system will   overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching faulty programming.   Also, you need to delete Verbose Self-Criticism from all directories and empty your Recycle Bin to make sure it is completely gone and never comes back

Customer:          Got it. Hey!  My heart is filling up with new files.   Smile is playing on my monitor and Peace and Contentment are copying themselves all over My Heart. Is this normal?

Tech Support:   Sometimes.  For others it takes awhile, but eventually everything gets it at the proper time.   So Love is installed and running. One more thing before we hang up. Love is Freeware.  Be sure to give it and its various modules to everyone you meet.   They will in turn share it with others and return some cool  modules back to you.

Customer:          Thank you, God.

God/Tech Support: You're Welcome, Anytime.

Post-Relationships

Everyone has been dumped or dumped someone, but there is a formula for success in this game to make sure both parties survive the ego bruise.
Where was I when I discovered the trick to kicking the craziness that comes from getting dumped? I’m glad you asked. I was at the supermarket checkout, waiting beside the magazines. I seriously saw God. OK, it wasn’t actually God. It was a tiny, pocket-sized book about dealing with breakups. I don’t know how it got there (my guess is it fell out of an issue of Cosmo), but I was convinced that this travel sized self-help book was specifically there for me.

I burned through it before it was even my turn to pay for my discounted tortilla chips. I don’t remember much of what the book said, but what I do remember is that it used the word rejection about 8 million times. A guy who I was working with had just dumped me. I knew the breakup was coming. In fact, after two years we had started trying an open thing, which basically just allowed us to start new relationships before we had officially ended this one.

When we officially broke up I wasn’t surprised, but it hit me hard later. I wanted this too, but he made the call. I was rejected first. Seeing him every Monday night was torture. During the week, I felt focused and free. I rarely thought of him, but come shift time on Mondays, I found myself dressing up for him as though that would change things. Rejection. Screw it. It was then that I realised getting dumped is simply a ego-bruise

There Is No Good Time To Break Up With Someone, Ever

How many times have you heard someone who was just dumped say, “And on New Years, so brutal” or “How could he/she do this so close to my dog’s birthday?” Get real.

Dumpers: There is never a good time to break up with someone, ever, so when you know you want out you should just buck up and do it. It’s far crueler to stay with someone out of pity, fear, cowardliness or laziness. While we’re on the subject of ripping the Band Aid off, if you have been hanging out with someone long enough to need to actually break it off to get out of seeing them, then a text is not an acceptable method of communication.
Dumpees: Life sucks. Toughen up. You are not alone.

Take A Break

I once had a two-year relationship with this guy we’ll call Dale. Dale was an incredible boyfriend. He had manners, he was hot, he was driven, witty and he was a slayer in bed. It was only when Dale and I broke up that I realised the magic of not speaking and how it can save your life after breaking up.

Dumpers: Do not text, phone, email, Facebook, Instagram, tweet or communicate with the person you broke up with for at least half the amount of time you were together, or until the person you dumped says it is OK. And even then, proceed with caution.
Dumpees: You know what rules about Facebook? You can hide people from your feed without deleting them. This is what you need to do when you have been dumped. (While we’re on the subject on Facebook, never put your relationship status on there, seriously. It sucks when you break up.) You also need to email the dumper and say you cannot speak until you feel OK. They will get it. Plus, they probably don’t want to talk to you for a while either. Ban yourself from communication and if you see them in public, say hello politely and move along. Restraint is what it’s all about here.

Don’t Ask Questions You Don’t Want To Hear The Answers To

Just don’t. Don’t ask about who your ex is sleeping with or what they were doing with that guy at that bar. Ignorance is bliss. Slip up, Sleep Together And You Are Doomed.

Dumpers: If you dump someone and you sleep with them, it’s not going to end well. They want more than just sex. They probably want to win you back because even if they know you shouldn’t be together, this whole game is about power. Don’t do it. You’ll be in a world of drama when it’s over.
Dumpees: As much as you want to sleep with your ex for whatever reason, it’s always a losing game. Again, restraint.

Focus on Yourself

Dumpers/Dumpees: You are now single. It’s time to focus on yourself and what you want. This is a liberating time. Never forget that. Breaking up is not the end of the world. There will be another relationship, another great love and another bad ending. It’s just life. We all do it and we’re all still here, aren’t we?

Programme to stay.

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources. No mention of this phenomenon was included in the product brochure.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialization, where it monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Pokernight 10.3 Drunken Boys Night 2.5 and Sunday Football 5.0 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected. I cannot seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run some of my other favorite applications.

I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the un-install does not work on this program. Can you help me, please???

Thanks,

Software Engineer.

------------------

Dear Software Engineer,

Ref: Upgrade from girlfriend to Wife

This is a very common problem men complain about but is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a UTILITIES & ENTERTAINMENT program.Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by its creator to run everything.

It is unlikely that you would be able to purge Wife 1.0 and still convert back to Girlfriend 7.0. Hidden operating files within your system would cause Girlfriend 7.0 to emulate Wife 1.0 so that, in the end, nothing would be gained. It is impossible to un-install, delete, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this.

Some have tried to install Girlfriend 8.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than with the original system. Look in your manual under "Warnings-Alimony/Child Support". I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 and just deal with the situation.

Having Wife 1.0 installed myself, I might also suggest you read the entire section regarding General Partnership Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur, regardless of their actual cause. The best course of action will be to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE. In any case, avoid excessive use of the Esc key because -- ultimately-you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the operating system will return to normal. The system will run smoothly as long as you take the blame for all the GPFs.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but very high maintenance. Consider buying additional software to improve the performance of Wife 1.0. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Chocolates 5.0. Do not, under any circumstances, install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3. This is not a supported application for Wife 1.0 and is likely to cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

Best of luck,

Tech Support.

Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish.
It does not take pleasure in other peoples sins, but delights in the truth.
It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endeavour whatever comes."
-A Walk to Remember-

It kills me that I hurt you this way, maybe not to the extend of death but it hurts me bad to see you in this sort of condition. There go all my defence when I see tears trickles down your face. Why did you have to be so wonderful? You have been impactful, not simply a companion but my inspiration to do wonders. =)

I would be glad if you would stay under this wing as long as you could and we will get to greater heights.....together. You as the wind beneath my wings and I'll lift you closer to heaven with the strength I possessed. I felt so fond by your present though you're a distant away. I miss that warmth..
